Shetland lace

[In Shetland] it was a source of pride that the patterns, learnt at a mother's knee* or worked out from an example, were retained in the knitter's head.

*girls started to learn to knit patterns by knitting the alternate plain rows between the patterned ones their mothers work. (p. 8)
